Gabbard takes fundraising lead in US House race

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu City Councilwoman Tulsi Gabbard took the fundraising lead in the latest reporting quarter in the race for Hawaii's 2nd Congressional District seat.

Gabbard's campaign noted Monday she outraised former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann and has more cash on hand than him with 26 days until the primary.

In the April to June period, Gabbard raised about $321,000 and has $541,000 cash on hand.

According to the Federal Election Commission, Hannemann raised about $252,000 during the quarter and has $504,000 cash on hand.

Office of Hawaiian Affairs Chief Advocate Esther Kiaaina raised $21,000 while Hilo attorney Bob Marx raised $49,000.

The Democrats seek to replace U.S. Rep. Mazie Hirono, who is trying to succeed retiring U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka. The 2nd District includes rural and suburban Oahu and neighbor islands.
