KEALAKEKUA, Hawaii (AP) — A Kealakekua man has been convicted of sexually assaulting two children.
Derek Cavillis faces up to 140 years in prison if sentenced in September to consecutive terms for six counts of first-degree sex assault and four counts of third-degree sex assault.
The children testified during trial that they were repeatedly sexually assaulted while they were between the ages of 5 and 8. They testified they remained silent for several years because of threats from Cavillis.
Thirty-nine-year-old Cavillis claimed he has been high on methamphetamine when he confessed to police.
