HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii bankruptcies fell to their lowest level in nearly four years.
According to the data released Monday by U.S. Bankruptcy Court, there were 185 filings in June. That's 33 percent fewer than 276 cases filed in June 2011.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reports it's the lowest volume since July 2008 when there were 157 filings.
Like the rest of the nation, Hawaii residents are taking advantage of low interest rates to help control long-term debt.
On Oahu, the number of cases fell to 117, a 28.2 percent drop from the same month last year. They fell to 30 in Maui county, a 53.8 percent drop from June 2011. In Hawaii County there were 28 cases, a 6.7 drop. For Kauai County, there was a 4.4 decline to 10 cases.
