HONOLULU (AP) — A new law requires Hawaii students be at least 5 years old on July 31 of the same year to enter kindergarten.
Hawaii is phasing out junior kindergarten to make way for implementation of an early learning program. Legislation Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed into law Thursday establishes an early learning office that he says will help develop a program plan.
Hawaii is one of 11 states without a publicly funded preschool program. State Senate Committee on Education Chair Jill Tokuda says the measure will focus on the 4-year olds most impacted by the loss of junior kindergarten.
A law passed in 2010 made it clear a child must be at least 5 by July 31 for kindergarten but the new law pushes the mandate back to the 2014-15 school year.
