DUI statistics reveal alarming impact of impaired motorists

The police drunk driving dragnet hauled in 30 motorists during the week ending June 24, 2012. The year to date total now stands at 678, which is down 3.6 percent from 703 a year ago. Major accidents are up 5.7 percent at 699, compared to 661 at this time last year, and the island’s 14 fatalities represent a 27.3 percent increase over the 11 a year ago. 11 of this year’s fatalities were related to drugs, alcohol or both
