HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie plans to veto a bill that would levy fees on private hospitals that could help cover health care costs for the poor.
Abercrombie's office says in a statement there are concerns about the effect and fairness of the measure.
Under the bill, private hospitals would pay $42 million in fees to get federal money in return.
Senate Health Committee state Sen. Josh Green tells the Honolulu Star-Advertiser it's an important bill that will help keep hospitals open and bring tens of millions in federal money without cost to taxpayers.
Abercrombie has until July 10 to formally veto the bill and 18 others that he indicated he plans to veto.
