HONOLULU (AP) — Contractors are making a shiny $2 million floor at Honolulu International Airport less slippery.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Monday the anti-slip surface is being installed after some slips and falls of arriving passengers. The glossy, sand-colored terrazzo flooring featuring Hawaiian words was installed for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum.
Stone Masters Inc. of Mililani did the work. Company President Micah Watts says officials insisted on using the indoor flooring for a heavily traveled outdoor breezeway. He says making it pretty and inviting has also made it slippery.
State Department of Transportation spokeswoman Caroline Sluyter disputes that assertion. She says transportation officials haven't received any formal complaints the contractors are doing the work at no additional cost because the original surface did not hold up to the wear and tear.
