A bill opposing the aerial eradication of animals has won the second of two required approvals. The measure directed at the state Department of Land and Natural Resources was introduced by Council Chairman Dominic Yagong, who said it was important to
send a strong message to other government jurisdictions.
“If you want to do it in Kauai, you want to do it in Honolulu, you want to do it in Maui or any place else, then that’s their kuleana,” Yagong said. “But we’re saying here in Hawai`i County, enough is enough.”
Its uncertain whether the County can actually enforce a ban on a federal mandate carried out by a state agency. But the Council voted 9-0 to approve the bill and send it to Mayor Billy Kenoi for his signature or veto. Council members also voted 9-0
to give the second of three required approvals to placing a Charter Amendment that would create a Game Management Advisory Commission on the November ballot.
