Education officials have come up with a plan to maintain school bus service in the face of a $17 million dollar budget deficit. The Department of Education initially proposed cutting 125 bus routes impacting some 3,800 students, but was told by the Board of
Education to re-examine those cuts in an effort to save some routes. The BOE has approved a plan to cover about $11.5 million of the deficit by restricting funds for other school programs and setting aside $1.5 million from a multi-million dollar federal award for the student transportation program. The DOE is finalizing its list of specific bus routes that will be affected and will post that list on its website later this week.
