Governor Neil Abercrombie has signed Senate Bills 2115 and 2116, which will reform the governance of Hawaii's charter schools and the Board of Education quickly appointed members to the new Public School Charter Commission that will oversee the system.
The measures will put charter schools on performance contracts to better track academics and finances at the 32 campuses, which educate close to 10,000 students.
They will also strengthen monitoring of charters by creating the commission to oversee the system and report annually on charter performance. The nine member panel will include former Waimea Middle School Principal John Colson and Kona Pacific Charter School Director Usha Kotner.
