Hawaii public school principals who get high rankings in a pilot performance evaluation program will be eligible for a $10,000 bonus.
Officials are calling the one-time bonus the first experiment of a merit pay system for Hawaii's public school educators.
Hawaii has promised to institute revamped evaluations for teachers and principals as part of the state's application for a $75 million federal Race to the Top grant.
Schools Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi says the bonuses are meant to reward principals who improve their schools.
Under the deal reached last month with the Hawaii Government Employees Association, all principals will be rated on the new system in the 2013-14 school year.
Details on bonus eligibility haven't yet been worked out.
