Searchers seek five missing kayakers

By Associated Press

(Hagatna, Guam-AP) -- The search for five Guam kayakers resumed today as work continued to restore water and electric service knocked out by the passage of Typhoon ``Tingting.''

The Coast Guard says the kayakers encountered large offshore swell kicked up by the storm. The five men had gone out in three kayaks that were discovered overturned in waters off Piti.

The water and electrical problems stemmed from heavy rains that hit the U-S territory Sunday.

In the neighboring Northern Mariana Islands, the storm knocked out electric power to about 25 percent of the residents on Saipan.

Hundreds of residents found refuge in nine emergency shelters, but only one shelter remained in operation last night.

The National Weather Service office has canceled all watches and warnings issued for the storm.
