HILO, Hawaii (AP) — A settlement offer rejected by the county council asks for $10,000 for each of the three fired Big Island election workers, a public apology and their jobs back.
West Hawaii Today obtained the settlement offer Wednesday. The council voted unanimously to reject the offer by Hilo attorney Ted Hong.
Hong says the fired workers now have no choice but to proceed with a $1.5 million lawsuit.
Election Office Administrator Pat Nakamoto, Warehouse Manager Glen Shikuma and Elections Worker Shyla Ayau lost their jobs after an investigation found alcohol and privately owned sign-making equipment in the elections warehouse.
Investigators believed Shikuma, who previously owned a sign-making company, was conducting private business in a county facility.
Hong claims they were falsely accused and humiliated when their names were made public.
