(Honolulu-AP) -- Flanked by Governor Lingle and former Congresswoman Pat Saiki, former television newsman Dalton Tanonaka announced today that he's running for Congress as a Republican.
He's trying to unseat seven-term Democrat Neil Abercrombie in the First District which stretches from Ewa Beach to Honolulu to Hawaii Kai and covering parts of Central Oahu.
Tanonaka says he's running because Hawaii needs an objective and sensible voice representing its interests in a Republican-controlled Congress.
Saiki, who was Hawaii's last Republican in Congress, is chairing his campaign.
Lingle says she and other Republicans are going to work hard to get Tanonaka elected.
In response to the announcement, Abercrombie's campaign headquarters issued a statement citing what it says is his strong record of creating jobs in Hawaii, particularly with military projects.
