HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii senators and the state Department of Education are pushing a bill that delays a requirement for state schools to have a full 180-instructional day year until 2014.
The Senate Education Committee passed a measure Wednesday that moves the implementation date for the 180-day school year from fall 2011 to fall 2014.
The Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported Thursday that Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi estimated it would cost up to $55 million to keep students in classrooms longer next school year, and the Education Department doesn't have that money.
Students attend school for 178 instructional days this school year.
A law calling for a longer school year was passed last year in response to teacher furloughs that eliminated 17 days from the instructional calendar in the 2009-2010 school year.
