Akaka co-sponsors bill to end 'don't ask' policy

HONOLULU (AP) — U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka is co-sponsoring stand-alone legislation to repeal the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy banning gay men and lesbians from serving openly.
In a statement Friday, Akaka said a recent Pentagon study showed that a large majority of troops are prepared to serve with openly gay service members.
A member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, he says congressional action that results in orderly implementation of a new policy is preferable to a judicial order.
Language repealing the "don't ask" policy was to be tacked onto a broad defense policy bill on Thursday. But the move couldn't attract the necessary 60 votes in the Senate.
Advocates hope the new measure will pass after a tax cut compromise is approved.
