Faleomavaega wins 12th election to Congress

By Associated Press

PAGO PAGO, American Samoa (AP) American Samoa's nonvoting delegate to Congress, Eni H. Faleomavaega, has won a 12th consecutive two-year term.

According to unofficial results from Tuesday's general election in the U.S. territory, Faleomavaega, a Democrat, garnered 56.3 percent of the vote in the three-way race.

Voters also decided to reject a package of 34 proposed amendments to American Samoa's constitution.

There was strong criticism to the decision to group all of the amendments together for a single "yes" or "no" vote, instead of having them voted on separately.

Chief Election Officer Soliai T. Fuimaono had said it was the simplest way to put the question to voters.

They voted down the package 7,660-3,257.
