(Honolulu-AP) -- The decomposing carcass of a 45-foot sperm whale that was towed 35 miles out to sea last week drifted back to Oahu today.
The whale, which weighs about 20 tons, was towed out of Kaneohe Bay on Friday but reappeared off Kaaawa.
The contractor that towed the carcass out the first time was rehired to tow the whale out again.
Officials say it will be towed west to the channel between Oahu and Kauai.
Marine biologist believe the whale has been dead for at least a month.
Decimated worldwide by commercial whaling, the species is listed as endangered and is protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972.
