(Port Vila, Vanuatu-AP) -- Vanuatu faces an early general election.
The Supreme Court has upheld the acting president's decision to dissolve parliament amid political turmoil in the South Pacific nation.
The next scheduled election wasn't due until 2006. The last election in 2002 ushered in the government of Prime Minister Edward Natapei.
However, defections from his supporter base in the 50-seat parliament _ a regular occurrence in Vanuatu politics _ led to Natapei losing his majority earlier this year.
The Cabinet then called on the president to dissolve parliament after opposition leader Serge Vohor called a vote of no-confidence in the government.
Acting President Roger Abiut upheld Natapei's decision.
Had Vohor won the no-confidence vote, as expected, he would have replaced Natapei as prime minister.
