HONOLULU (AP) — Construction of a permanent University of Hawaii-West Oahu campus in Kapolei has finally started following decades of planning and funding efforts.
The first phase of construction of the second four-year University of Hawaii campus on Oahu will cost about $100 million and finish in spring 2012.
West Oahu Chancellor Gene Awakuni says classes on the new campus will start in 2012.
The project includes money to build five buildings, including classrooms, labs and a parking lot.
The buildings will accommodate up to 3,700 students.
UH-West Oahu currently has about 1,500 students, and it will grow to about 2,000 students by the time the next campus opens.
