HONOLULU (AP) — Internet, phone and cable television service is back on for hundreds of thousands of people in Hawaii despite a break in an undersea cable that'll likely take weeks to fix.
Some 400,000 customers of Oceanic Time Warner Cable lost service Tuesday when the break occurred in a deep water undersea fiber-optic cable in the Molokai Channel.
Service was rerouted and restored early Tuesday on Oahu and Kauai, and later that afternoon on the Big Island.
Oceanic Vice President Norman Santos says repairs to the damaged cable will have to wait until a cable-laying ship arrives in three weeks.
Meanwhile, Maui County officials says its office phones with the 270 prefix are expected back in service by Wednesday morning.
