Honolulu sets Sept. 18 date for mayoral election

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) Honolulu voters will decide on their next mayor Sept. 18, the same day as the statewide primary election.

The Honolulu City Council voted 5-2 Thursday to hold the election in September rather than wait until the Nov. 2 general election.

The two candidates for mayor who sit on the council, Donovan Dela Cruz and Rod Tam, recused themselves from the vote.

The winner-take-all race will determine who will serve the remaining two years of former Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann's term. Hannemann resigned to run for governor Tuesday.

Besides Dela Cruz and Tam, other likely candidates include acting Mayor Kirk Caldwell, Prosecuting Attorney Peter Carlisle and engineering professor Panos Prevedouros.
