Study: job market will pick up

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — A University of Hawaii study says "stirrings of private sector recovery" and government contracts will mean the job market will pick up in coming months.

The report also declares "Hawaii's economic recovery has begun," noting the state's vital tourism industry is showing positive signs. It says airlines are initiating or adding flights and larger aircraft to Hawaii routes.

It also concludes private construction is poised to improve as a result of federal and state spending programs.

But, the report says the pace of recovery will be slow, because of lackluster consumer spending and Hawaii's budget problems.

It says while furloughs and pay cuts of government employees are causing a drag on the state's economy, state revenues appear to be a bit healthier than previously estimated.
