HONOLULU (AP) — The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has awarded $3 million to support healthy living while combating obesity on Kauai and Maui.
The money will be used by the state's Kauai and Maui District Health Offices to raise residents' knowledge and awareness of healthy eating and active living through a media campaign.
There are also funds to increase physical activity and to improve nutrition for residents through social support and culturally appropriate education.
The grant will also be used to create infrastructure for production, distribution and processing of locally grown products, including links with schools, restaurants and grocery stores.
Hawaii Congresswoman Mazie Hirono said Friday that the money comes the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
