HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu Harbor will receive $24 million in federal stimulus funds through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.
Hawaii Congressman Neil Abercrombie said Wednesday that the funding is part of the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery Discretionary Grant Program. It has targeted more than $1 billion to surface transportation projects across the country.
The island Democrat says the funding helps create and sustain job opportunities in construction, and supports Hawaii's future economic growth by improving its harbor system.
Abercrombie says more efficient operation of cargo facilities at Pier 29 means the port can handle a higher level of commercial activity, and that helps local businesses.
