HONOLULU (AP) — The Army wants to base one or more high-speed vessels like the one operated by the now-defunct Hawaii Superferry at Pearl Harbor.
The Army said in a news release Monday that it's seeking public input for an environmental impact statement it's conducting on the proposal.
It's also looking at basing the ships in Virginia, San Diego, Calif., Seattle-Tacoma, Wash., and Guam.
The Army didn't say how many vessels were being proposed for each location, only that it's proposing to have up to 12 overall.
The Hawaii Superferry used a similar ship for the state's first interisland car and passenger service. The Army's version will have a helicopter landing deck and weapons mounts.
