UH astronomy director stepping down after 10 years

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — The director of the University of Hawaii's Institute for Astronomy will be stepping down after 10 years on the job.

Rolf-Peter Kudritzki says he will leave at the end of the year, taking a sabbatical in January and returning to the institute as a faculty member to continue teaching and research.

Kudritzki has spent 30 years in director positions in Hawaii and in Germany. He says he wants to spend more time on his scientific work, developing methods to learn more about the formation, composition and evolution of stars.

The institute's associate director, Robert McLaren, says Kudritzki has "played a key role" in efforts to bring the Advanced Technology Solar Telescope to Haleakala on Maui and the Thirty Meter Telescope to Mauna Kea on the Big Island.
