HONOLULU (AP) — A Honolulu Circuit Court jury has acquitted a 21-year-old man in a shooting that left a 16-year-old boy paralyzed for life.
Joshua Gonda remained in custody Thursday because he's facing a one-year federal prison term for a drug conviction.
Defense attorney David Bettencourt says the 18 months Gonda spent in custody in the shooting case doesn't count in the federal case.
Gonda was accused of wounding Roger Curioso, a passenger in a car that was fired upon while traveling on Moanalua Freeway in 2008.
Prosecutors say Gonda and Curioso were members of rival gangs, BTK (Born to Kill) and INR (Insane Notorious Realists).
Bettencourt has said Gonda was framed because he had squealed on other gang members about a home invasion robbery and shooting.
