HONOLULU (AP) — University of Hawaii professor Panos D. Prevedouros is saying he will run for mayor of Honolulu this year if the incumbent, Mufi Hannemann, seeks the governor's office.
In a statement Monday, Prevedouros said he would scrap the city's 20-mile elevated commuter rail system Hannemann backs. A civil engineer, Prevedouros has long opposed the project.
He also criticized city decisions on wastewater treatment, traffic congestion and garbage landfills.
The 49-year-old Prevedouros finished third in the 2008 mayoral race in which Hannemann won his second term.
By state law, Hannemann must resign from the mayor's post if he files papers to run for the Democratic nomination for governor, as he is expected to do later this year.
