Guam cancels produce importation ban

SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands (AP) — Guam's Department of Agriculture has rescinded its memorandum banning the importation of produce from the neighboring Northern Mariana Islands.
Northern Marianas Sen. Paul Manglona says the two governments will work together to reach a consensus on how to deal with the situation.
The ban was imposed after Northern Marianas farmers said they intended to sell their produce to the U.S. military on Guam.
The ban was felt by people from Rota who attempted to bring sweet potatoes with them to Guam. They complained the sweet potatoes were confiscated because of the new agriculture policy requiring a $10 license to bring produce to Guam.
Those who tried to bring small quantities as gifts said the new policy was harsh, especially at Christmas time.
