The University of Hawai`i at Hilo’s graduating class heard two generational
success stories during today’s fall commencement held at the UH Hilo new gym. At
18, student speaker Gladys Tong became one of the youngest to ever earn a four year
degree by completing work on a bachelor’s in Business Administration in just two
and a half years. Tong, a native of Singapore told her fellow graduates to find
strength in their weaknesses, because success will be determined by the choices they
make.
“When we ‘re confronted with an obstacle or situation we can choose the best
outcome out of it or the worst. I believe there are always options,” Tong said.
“Every obstacle is an opportunity to improve one’s condition.”
In his keynote address, Bank of Hawai`i Vice Chair and Chief Commercial Officer
Wayne Hamano said his journey from Hilo to the corporate boardroom was made possible
by remaining true to basic small town values.
“You have all heard of hard work, integrity, and education as keys to
success,” Hamada said. “The secret sauce is this; while the values are common,
consistent practice of these are not.”
Both Hamano and Tong emphasized that today marks a beginning, not an end and
urged the graduates to become life-long learners.
A total of 269 students were candidates for various degrees and certificates
representing the Colleges of Arts and Sciences (219), Agriculture, Forestry and
Natural Resource Management (11), College of Business and Economics (31) and Ka Haka
`Ula O Ke`elikolani College of Hawaiian Language (8).
