Officials warn of University of Hawaii burglaries

By Associated Press

HONOLULU (AP) — Residents in the University of Hawaii at Manoa student housing facilities are being warned about a series of burglaries in the buildings.

A spokesman for the university says school officials set out an e-mail alert to students and staff members after four burglaries were reported last week. The latest break-ins come after a rash of burglaries were reported in October.

UH spokesman Gregg Takayama says burglars have been targeting walk-up apartments with easily accessible windows.

He says the burglars have been removing window screens, reaching in and taking items off the desks at night while students are asleep.

In some cases, iPods and laptops have been stolen.
