HONOLULU (AP) — The state Elections Commission has accepted the resignation of elections chief Kevin Cronin, but his plan to close 97 polling places in next year's balloting moved forward anyway.
The commission accepted Cronin's resignation Wednesday. It is effective Dec. 31.
Commission Chairman William Marston says the panel will move quickly to select an interim chief elections officer, but finding a permanent replacement may take months. He says there is no timetable for those decisions.
Cronin told commissioners his plan to close almost 30 percent of the state's polling sites was due to his agency's inability to obtain more funding from Gov. Linda Lingle and the Legislature.
Marston says the commission has no authority to halt the plan.
