HONOLULU (AP) — An agreement between the Hawaii State Public Library System and a state employee union will result in the closure of 51 Hawaii libraries for 15 days through mid-May.
All public libraries will be closed Dec. 16, 24 and 31; Jan. 13 and 27; Feb. 3 and 10; March 5, 12 and 19; April 7, 14 and 21, and May 5 and 19.
The pact with the Hawaii Government Employees Association also calls for closures on March 4, 11 and 18 of six libraries that normally are closed on Fridays.
The union represents almost 560 employees.
They and nonunion workers will see about a 10 percent pay cut through June, resulting in $700,000 in savings for the system.
The agreement also calls for 15 furlough days in the fiscal year that begins July 1.
