HONOLULU (AP) — Budget cuts may force the state Elections Office to close 40 percent of the state's polling places for next year's gubernatorial and other major elections.
A plan released Tuesday by Chief Elections Officer Kevin Cronin says his tiny agency has been hampered by budget cuts and has far too little money to hire necessary seasonal staff to train a sufficient number of volunteers for the 2010 balloting.
He says 97 of the 242 precincts that were designated for last year's elections should be consolidated into adjacent precincts.
That includes 76 precincts on Oahu, the state's most populous island; 18 on the Big Island; three on Maui, and none on Kauai.
The plan may be discussed Wednesday at the meeting of the state Elections Commission.
