HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu police mistakenly issued an alert about a possible child abduction that was seen on television stations and heard on radio stations in the area.
Police spokeswoman Michelle Yu said Monday the message should have been issued as a test, but was sent out in error as a real alert.
The program is patterned after the Amber Alert system used on the mainland.
It is put into operation when a child younger than 11 years old is believed to have been abducted or to be in imminent danger of serious bodily injury or death.
