Hawaii GOP fielding only 1 lieutenant governor hopeful so far

HONOLULU (AP) — Only one Republican is running for lieutenant governor in Hawaii next year while a handful of Democrats are actively campaigning for their party's nomination.
Adrienne King is the lone Republican, and she had collected only $550 as of late June. No other Hawaii Republican has publicly signaled a desire to seek the GOP nomination.
Meantime, five Democrats have opened campaign committees. They had more than $470,000 in their collective war chests as of late June.
Analysts say the dearth of GOP candidates is likely due to the difficulty the Republican gubernatorial contender will face next November in a solidly Democratic state.
But Republican officials say there is plenty of time for more GOP candidates for lieutenant governor to enter the race.
