HONOLULU (AP) — An effort to build a community with as many as 12,000 homes on Oahu has come to an end.
In 1987, Gentry Cos. agreed to buy about 3,700 acres of land at Waiawa Ridge from Kamehameha Schools.
But according to documents filed with the state Bureau of Conveyances, the sale and development agreement between Gentry and the trust was terminated because Gentry failed to meet certain financing commitments.
The termination notice says all plans and rights to develop the property between Pearl City and Waipio have been returned to the landowner.
Gentry is one of the state's largest residential developers. It has built about 15,000 homes and commercial projects over the last 40 years mostly on Oahu. Its projects include Waipio by Gentry and Ewa by Gentry.
