HONOLULU (AP) — The president of Hawaii's teachers' union says it was Gov. Linda Lingle's idea to furlough public school teachers as a budget-balancing tool and that she shouldn't be trying to pass the blame.
Hawaii State Teachers Association president Wil Okabe accused Lingle on Saturday of shirking her responsibility after she said the labor contract drafted by the state Department of Education, state Board of Education and the union was not prepared in the best interests of students.
The contract included 34 days of unpaid teacher furloughs over the next two years.
Okabe says the governor is trying "to point the finger at others" now that angry parents are protesting the school closures made necessary by the furloughs.
Messages left Sunday at the governor's office by The Associated Press were not immediately returned.
