HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann says the city's first major rail transit construction contract has been awarded to Kiewit Pacific Co.
The $483 million design/build contract is for construction of the first six miles of the elevated guideway, running from Kapolei to Pearl Highlands, near Leeward Community College.
Groundbreaking is set for December.
Hannemann said yesterday that the price tag for the first phase is $90 million less than projected because of the poor economy.
He says all of the money to pay for the first phase comes from the increase in the general excise tax dedicated to rail transit.
Hannemann expressed confidence that federal funds will be available for future phases.
The entire 20-mile route from Kapolei to Ala Moana is slated for completion in 2019.
