HONOLULU (AP) — University of Hawaii regents are asking Gov. Linda Lingle to approve almost $236 million in construction bonds but are not seeking restoration of $100 million in general funds she and the Legislature cut from university allocations.
The regents on Thursday approved a supplemental budget request to the governor calling for the construction bonds to repair aging buildings.
The request also seeks $31 million for a new College of Hawaiian Language building at the UH-Hilo campus.
More than 100 students and faculty crowded the regents meeting at UH-Manoa to protest the general fund cuts to the university.
Some waved signs saying, "Support schools, not banks" and "Capitalism is the crisis."
Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw said the cuts are hurting but her campus cannot be exempt from reductions.
