Dairy cow gives birth while flying to Hawaii

HONOLULU (AP) — Mooove over.
An airline flight of 50 cows from California to Hawaii got more crowded earlier this month when one gave birth.
Since all the cows were pregnant, Island Dairy herd manager Adam Beard says the birth of the bull calf later named "Air-born" wasn't a total shock.
The cows were due to give birth in about a month, and Beard says the stress of flying can sometimes induce early calving.
Big Island-based Island Dairy chartered the Sept. 3 Pacific Airlift Inc. flight as part of the effort to expand its herd of about 700 cows to increase milk production.
Mainland dairies struggling in the bad economy have made cows available at attractive prices. Beard says a flight with 40 more pregnant cows is scheduled to arrive Thursday.
