HONOLULU (AP) — State chief elections officer Kevin Cronin is being criticized by the chairwoman of the Senate Ways and Means Committee for not providing detailed answers about budget requests and controversial voting machine contracts.
Democratic state Sen. Donna Mercado Kim also said yesterday that she has "serious concerns" about Cronin's knowledge and preparation. And she questioned Cronin's intention to allow his wife -- a lawyer with election management experience -- to volunteer in the elections office.
Kim ended the nearly two-hour committee hearing saying she is disinclined to lift legislative restrictions on some state elections office spending.
Cronin has said his office's current budget has too little money to fill four positions that are vital to smooth elections in 2010.
