SAIPAN, Northern Mariana Islands (AP) — Authorities have been unable to locate a Japanese surfer who was last seen off Saipan in the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.
Thirty-one-year-old Hirofumi Matusumoto has been missing since authorities say a strong current pulled him and a friend away from a reef behind a local hotel around 4 p.m. Sunday.
Department of Public Safety spokesman Jason Tarkong says Matusumoto called to his friend for help as he struggled to paddle back to shore.
The friend was able to catch a wave and return safely, but lost sight of Matusumoto.
A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter and cutter assisted with the search, which continued yesterday.
