HONOLULU (AP) — Democratic U.S. Sens. Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka have introduced a resolution recognizing the 50th anniversary of Hawaii attaining statehood.
In remarks prepared for delivery yesterday on the floor of the Senate, Inouye noted that Aug. 21 marks the anniversary of a proclamation signed by President Dwight D. Eisenhower, admitting Hawaii as the 50th State.
Inouye said Hawaii has been a rich cultural addition to the United States, thanks to the ancient culture of Native Hawaiians, the diverse multiracial society created by generations of Asian and European immigrants, and its stunning natural beauty.
A similar resolution introduced by Democratic Rep. Neil Abercrombie and co-sponsored by Democratic Rep. Mazie Hirono was approved by the House on Monday.
