Inmate dies after attack at Calif. federal prison

By Associated Press

VICTORVILLE, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say an inmate at a federal prison in Southern California has died of injuries sustained in an attack by other inmates.

The San Bernardino County coroner's office says Gregory Francis Ritter was pronounced dead late Wednesday at a hospital where he was being treated for upper body trauma.

The 30-year-old inmate from Honolulu was attacked Monday in a housing unit at the high-security United States Penitentiary Victorville. A prison spokesman says the FBI is investigating the assault and it's unclear how many suspects are involved. The prison is on lockdown during the probe, meaning inmates can't leave their cells and no visits are allowed.

Ritter was arrested in Waikiki in 2008 on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle. Police found firearms and drugs in his two bags.
