HONOLULU (AP) — National wildlife refuges and hatcheries in Hawaii will receive more than $8 million in stimulus funding.
Hawaii Senators Daniel Inouye and Daniel Akaka said in a Washington news release that the funding "will help protect and preserve irreplaceable, beautiful and unique parts of Hawaii."
They singled out Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge on Maui, which will get the bulk of the money. More than $7 million has been set aside to design and construct an administrative and visitors building to replace a structure destroyed by fire.
Funds will also be going to the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on the Big Island, the Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge on Kauai, the Pacific Islands Coastal Program and the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge.
