HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii's public schools will have to meet additional educational requirements without much more money if Gov. Linda Lingle follows through on her plan to use federal stimulus money to help balance the state budget.
The $157 million in stimulus funds come with expectations that states show improved achievement over a two-year period in four areas, including raising teacher quality and tracking student progress.
Education officials say they need the money to meet these new benchmarks.
But Lingle plans to cut the schools' budgets, replenish them with stimulus money and use the savings to fill the state's budget gap.
Lingle's senior policy adviser, Linda Smith, says schools will still get about $35 million of the stimulus money.
