The University of Hawai`i at Hilo played host Wednesday to a joint U.S.- China delegation of leading scientists and technical experts on renewable energy from the National Academies of Science and Engineering in both countries.
Delegates held a working meeting and roundtable discussion on campus, where they were joined by leading renewable energy researchers from the University, along with representatives
from the Mayor’s Office, Hawai`i Electric Light Company, the Kanoelehua Industrial Area Association and local agricultural businesses. Chancellor Rose Tseng, who greeted the Chinese delegates in their own language, said hosting the event is a big deal.
“All the top scientists are here. If you read the names, it’s the who’s-who and the best in the world,” Tseng said. “So this is very exciting for the Big Island and UH Hilo.”
The group came here to learn more about how the Big Island’s renewable energy strategies, initiatives and research can strengthen the economic foundation of the community. In addition to UH Hilo, delegates also visited the Natural Energy
Laboratory of Hawai`i Authority.
The work of this Committee on U.S. – China Cooperation on Electricity from Renewables will assist the national governments, their relevant agencies/ministries,
and private industries in assigning priorities for substantial and meaningful cooperation in developing and utilizing electricity from renewable energy.
