HONOLULU (AP) — Governor Lingle says President George W. Bush is nominating the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument to be a World Heritage site.
Bush is also suggesting George Washington's home, Mount Vernon, be put on the elite United Nations list of culturally and naturally significant places around the world.
These are the first sites the U.S. has nominated for the designation since 1994.
Bush created the Papahanaumokuakea monument in 2006. It encompasses the islands and waters of the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and is the country's largest protected area.
The U.S. will submit its nominations to the UNESCO World Heritage Center.
Final nominations will be considered by the summer of 2010.
